Sweet Hell - Mercury 2007
This year's Mercury Nominations have been released, and ho-hum:

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
Dizzee Rascal - Maths and English
The View - Hats Off to the Buskers
Maps - We Can Create
Bat For Lashes - Fur and Gold
Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future
Jamie T - Panic Prevention
The Young Knives - Voices of Animals and Men
Fionn Regan - The End of History
Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford - Basquiat Strings
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
New Young Pony Club - Fantastic Playroom

Needless to say, Arctic Monkeys and Whinehouse are favourites. It's an annoyingly mainstream list - normally the Mercurys is the one award that will nominate more obscure genres/acts, but this year, it could be the index of the NME. And quite possibly is.

I'm gunning for Bat For Lashes or Young Knives myself.

Ugh, I mean "Connection," not "Car Song." I am so ashamed.

Gasp! You're banned from Elastica!

Part of me thinks how good it is that a female solo artist is so successful...but I just wish it wasn't Winehouse and her faux-American accent. I swear "You Know I'm No Good" is either a cover, or the most obvious melody ever.

Nooooooooooo! [/clings to Elastica.]

Well, she looks and sounds like Janice from "Friends," doesn't she? And I'm all about more successful female artists, but, yes, it would help if it were someone better than AW. (I also rather hate the mountain-from-molehill drama, a la Pete, that has been spun from her life - I think the lack of any real, identifiable problems is one of the things that separates her from real soul singers.)
